Domestic air traffic on Sunday at highest level since pandemic: Jyotiraditya Scindia

Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has said that due to the constructive government policies, domestic air traffic touched its highest level on Sunday, since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic last year. He noted that a total of 3,27,923 passengers travelled on 2,372 flights within India on October 18. India’s daily domestic air traffic was approximately 4.25 lakh passengers, before the pandemic. The centre had suspended all scheduled domestic flights, as part of the pandemic induced lockdown, between March 25, 2020 and May 25, 2020.

Scindia tweeted on Monday that, “Owing to the constructive policies of the government, domestic air traffic has seen the highest level, post the onset of the pandemic”. He added that, “The civil aviation sector in India thrives amidst unprecedented challenges, whilst we make every effort to return to normalcy as early as possible”.

The government permitted airlines to operate only 33% of their pre-Covid domestic flights, when it resumed scheduled domestic services on May 25, 2020.

With time, the capacity gradually increased over time. On October 12, the government announced that airlines can operate without any capacity restrictions for domestic flights from October 18 onwards.
