Here’s how to protect data on lost phone

Nowadays phone thefts are quite common and it can happen to anybody. But losing the data and information in the phone may be more costlier than the phone. The phones usually have scanned copies of essential documents. It also has confidential banking apps, e-wallets, and UPI apps. So, how can one ensure that these are not misused. It’s essential to know how  can you secure your data and confidential details in such circumstances.

For instance, Unified Payments Interface or UPI allows users to transfer money in real-time without revealing their bank account details to the other party. Recently, cybercriminals have used UPI as a preferred method for  commiting scams. If your phone is stolen, the chances are that cyber frauds using your UPI may increase. Similarly, digital wallets have money, and a fraudsters can easily use it for shopping or making payments. Banking apps have sensitive details related to your bank account. If that data falls into wrong hands, it could really make you helpless.

Therefore, in case  you have lost your phone  or  it is stolen, take these essential steps in advance to secure your  details.

Block SIM

You should Immediately block your SIM card. This prevents the thief or anyone else from misusing your phone. Contact your telecom service provider’s customer care number. Request them to deactivate your phone number. Once the SIM is blocked, all apps that rely on OTP access will also be blocked. Since UPI or payment apps can be opened with just a tap, blocking the SIM will prevent access to these apps as well. It may take some time, but your privacy and mobile wallets will be secured.

File complaint

Afterward, you should file a complaint at your nearest police station. Request a copy of the First Information Report or the (FIR) from the police. This copy can serve as evidence in case of phone misuse or if your money is stolen.

Deactivate UPI

Another important step is to deactivate UPI payments as soon as your phone goes missing. Delaying this process could be costly. While apps like Amazon Pay, Google Pay, PhonePe, FreeCharge, and Paytm have made our lives convenient. If these apps fall in the wrong hands, these very apps can cause significant harm to you. Therefore, you should contact the help desk or customer care number of all these apps immediately upon losing your phone.

Wipe off data

You can also wipe all data from your phone at once. For Android users, visit the web address android.com/find. Log in with your Gmail account. It’s possible that multiple devices are linked to your Gmail account. Select the smartphone that is lost and erase your data. Similarly, for iPhone users, go to icloud.com/find on a web browser, sign in with your Apple ID. then click ”Erase this device” option to delete all apps and data from your phone.

By taking these steps, you can secure your essential data in case of phone theft. Just remember to stay alert, as immediate action is crucial. Without timely alerts, you could fall victim to instances of frauds, compromising your privacy and financial safety.
