The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has secured the top spot for third consecutive year in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2021 released by the education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Thursday.

The sixth edition of NIRF features other six IITs – including IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee – in the top 10 in overall rankings.

Further, in the overall rankings, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Banaras Hindu University secured the ninth and tenth spot respectively.

Ranks are given on the basis of the total sum of marks assigned for various parameters including – teaching, learning, and resources; research and professional practice, graduation outcome; outreach and inclusivity; and peer perception.

Therefore, developing regional ranking frameworks is a must which will ensure that the ranking framework emerges as a benchmark not only in the country, but also globally, especially for the developing economies.
