NITI Aayog has launched the third edition of India’s sustainable development goals (SDG) index and dashboard.

Developed by India’s think tank Niti Aayog, the index monitors the progress on the SDGs in the country as well as among the states and union territories by ranking them on the global goals.  The sustainable development goals include no poverty, zero hunger, good health, quality education, gender equality, economic growth, institutions, climate change, and environment, etc.

The index report focuses on the significance of partnerships and is titled ‘SDG India Index & Dashboard, 2020-21: Partnerships in The Decade of Action’.

The 2020 dashboard of SDG can be accessed on the website- https://sdgindiaindex.niti.gov.in/#/

Designed and developed by NITI Aayog, the preparation of the index follows extensive consultations with the primary stakeholders -the states and union territories; the UN agencies led by the United Nations in India, the ministry of statistics, and programme implementation (MoSPI), and the key union ministries.

SDG India index and dashboard

The index is developed in collaboration with the United Nations in India and covers 17 Goals, 70 targets, and 115 indicators.

It measures the progress through these indicators at the national and sub-national levels. It will help map the country’s journey towards meeting the targets. It is an advocacy tool to propagate the messages of sustainability, resilience, and partnerships, as well.

Highlights

India’s sustainable index goal composite score has improved from 60 in 2019 to 66 in 2020. Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Sikkim, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Haryana, Tripura, Mizoram, Punjab are the front running states in terms of the overall SDG index. Kerala has the highest score of 75 points.

Bihar, Jharkhand, and Assam were the worst-performing states in this year’s index.

The SDG India Index 3.0 score for the states ranges between 52 and 75; for the UTs it belongs to the 62 to 79 band. This presents a notable improvement from 2019-20 when the scores varied between 50 and 70 for the states and 59 and 70 for the UTs.

Kerala retained its rank as the top state with a score of 75. Chandigarh too maintained its top spot among the UTs with a score of 79.

Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh took the second spot while Goa, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh shared the fourth spot on the table.

This indicates that the country overall has progressed forward in its journey towards achieving the SDGs.
