Rise in Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra and Kerala is a cause of concern: Prime Minister Narendra Modi
PM Modi pointed out that during the last week 80% of cases and 84% of deaths have come from the six states present in the meeting.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with the chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha, Maharashtra, and Kerala to discuss Covid related situation. These six states account for more than 80% of the total cases during the month of July with some states having a very high test positivity rate. The Prime Minister said that the increasing numbers in Kerala and Maharashtra are cause of grave worry. Modi pointed out that during the last week 80% of cases and 84% of deaths have come from the states present in the meeting.
The chief ministers briefed the PM about the progress of vaccination and steps that are being taken to contain the spread of the virus in their states. They also provided feedback about the vaccination strategy.
The meeting discussed steps taken to boost medical infrastructure and suggestions on dealing with any possible rise of cases in the future. Post-covid issues being faced by patients and steps being taken to provide assistance in such cases were also put on the table.
The union health secretary also discussed the Covid cases in the country, and talked about the need to reinforce Covid appropriate behaviour and containment measures in the districts with the high caseload. He also suggested that opening up of these districts should be done in a graded and calibrated manner.
Modi lauded the state governments for their mutual cooperation and learning in their fight against the pandemic. He said, “All of us are at a point where apprehensions of the third wave are continuously expressed. Despite experts giving positive signals due to the downward trends, an increasing number of cases in few states is still worrisome.”
