Semiconductor shortage roils Maruti Suzuki’s September production

Maruti Suzuki’s production declined by 51% in September, owing to the global semiconductor shortage, which hampered its operations, according to a report by Reuters. India’s leading car manufacturer produced 81,278 units last month as against 1,66,086 units in the year ago period. In a regulatory filing, the auto major said it had produced 47,884 passenger vehicles in total during September 2021, as compared to 1,23,837 in the corresponding month in the previous year.

Out of this, 17,136 units were minicars and 29,272 were compact cars, which were substantially low from 30,492 units and 90, 924 units recorded by the segments in the previous years.

Mid size Ciaz’s production was also hit and dropped to 1,449 units in September, from 2,421 units in the year-ago period.

Production of utility vehicles declined to 21,873 units last month from 26,648 in September last year. Similarly, Van Eeco’s production slumped to 8,025 units from 11,183 units in September 2020.

In September 2021, the overall passenger vehicle production stood at 77,782 units as compared to 1,61,668 units in the previous year.

Impact to be felt in October too

Light commercial vehicle Super Carry’s production also took a beating and declined from 4,418 units to 3,496 units this year.

The company had reported a decline of 46.16% in sales at 86,380 units for September this year. This was 1,60,442 units in September last year. While domestic sales fell by 54.9% to 68,815 units last month as against 1,52,608 units in the same time period, a year ago.

It’s production plants at Haryana and Gujarat is set to operate at around 60% of normal level due to the prevailing crises and added that the impact of the semiconductor shortage would continue in October.
